Florida Ranks #1
Alright the title of this blog is a little misleading but it is true that Florida leads the nation in pedestrian fatalities per capita for the entire United States. For once in my life I was wishing that we were not number one at something and do not like to report these statistics but they are a fact, knowledge and understanding may be the best way to change future statistics in such a category.
As a West Palm Beach personal injury attorney, one might think that these are good statistics for my business. Truth be told, if it were not for people being careless and reckless there would be no need for personal injury lawyers, but I do not see that day happening in the near future or ever for that matter.
The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration reports that one out of every five fatal car accidents that happened in 2011 involved a pedestrian. In that same year it is estimated that over 70,000 pedestrians sustained a serious personal injury as a result of a car accident. The report went on to conclude that there is a fatal car accident involving a pedestrian every 2 hours and a pedestrian is severally injured every eight minutes.
The first step in fixing this problem is to understand what is causing these accidents. Once we understand the cause of these car accidents we can look for solutions. The study went on to state that excessive alcohol consumption played a part in over 33% of the pedestrians. They define excessive alcohol in terms of the person having a blood alcohol level that exceeded the legal limit of 0.08. While 13% of drivers that were involved in pedestrian fatalities had a blood alcohol level in excess of the legal limit of 0.08. In well over half of the pedestrian fatality car accidents that took place in Florida in 2011 at least one of the participants had some alcohol in their system.
